Marimecs provides engineering support to upgrade Doeksen’s LNG ferries

It takes two
To improve manoeuvrability and further reduce emissions, Willem de Vlamingh underwent a major technical upgrade. On sister ship Willem Barentsz, some upgrades have already been carried out, and preparations for the next phase are well underway. While the final hardware installation is scheduled for a later stage, much of the underlying engineering work has already been completed.
Marimecs provided a detailed 3D laser scan of the technical spaces on board, enabling precise integration of all modifications. Based on this scan, we carried out a large part of the engineering and drawing work, ensuring a smooth and efficient installation process.

The upgrades, carried out included
Permanent magnet motors (PTO/PTI) behind the main engines
New high-capacity battery packs
Additional bow thrusters on both sides of the vessels
A new DC power distribution system for shore-side emission-free operations

Modification results
By charging the batteries during each crossing, the ferries can now operate silently and emission-free while docking and unloading in port.
The modifications not only reduced fuel consumption and environmental impact, but also improved the vessels operational flexibility especially in difficult weather conditions.
